I grew up in church using and hearing these words often. It wasn’t until deeper study and intentional learning that I began to truly understand them.
Many of us were taught the language of church before we were taught the meaning. Scripture says to study to show yourself approved ( 2 Tim. 2:15 ).
Faith grows when understanding does.
Here are a few Christian words we say often…defined.
SANCTIFICATION
Is ongoing transformation not instant perfection.
You were justified in a moment.
You are sanctified over a lifetime.
~This is the work of the Holy Spirit~
ATONEMENT
Is the exchange where Jesus took our sin and gave
us His righteousness.
Not concealment.
Substitution.
JUSTIFICATION
Is a legal declaration, not an emotional experience.
God declares you righteous before you feel righteous.
REDEMPTION
Means bought back, not merely forgiven.
You were not just rescued…you were reclaimed!
RECONCILIATION
Is restored relationship not conflict avoidance.
Peace with God came through the Cross…not compromise.
REGENERATION
Is spiritual rebirth not behavior modification.
Christianity doesn’t start with better habits…it starts with NEW LIFE!
PROPITIATION
Means God’s wrath was satisfied, not ignored.
God didn’t lower His standard. Jesus met it!
~If we don’t define these words, we’ll misunderstand the Gospel.
