Is Alcohol and Cigarettes A Sin?

Ricky  /  June 14, 2026

IS SMOKING AND DRINKING OF ALCOHOL A SIN BEFORE GOD?
THE BIBLICAL TRUTH MANY BELIEVERS ARGUE ABOUT BUT FEW UNDERSTAND CORRECTLY

This is one of the most asked and most misunderstood questions in modern Christianity.

Is smoking a sin before God?
Is drinking alcohol automatically a sin?
Or is it only about moderation?

Many sincere believers are confused because opinions are everywhere, but Scripture remains the final authority.

Let us carefully examine this with clarity, balance, and truth from the Word of God.

First, the Bible does not mention cigarettes directly, because it was not part of ancient culture. However, Scripture gives us eternal principles that govern how we treat our bodies.

1. YOUR BODY BELONGS TO GOD

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

This means your body is not just yours to use anyhow you like. It is a vessel entrusted to you by God.

Anything that deliberately destroys, weakens, or enslaves the body becomes a spiritual concern, not just a physical habit.

Smoking is scientifically proven to damage the lungs, reduce health, and create long term addiction.

So while the Bible does not name “cigarettes,” it clearly supports the principle that believers should not destroy what God has entrusted to them.

2. DRINKING ALCOHOL AND WHAT THE BIBLE REALLY SAYS

The Bible does not say that all alcohol consumption is sin.

In fact, wine existed in biblical times, and Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1–11).

However, Scripture draws a very strong line:

Drunkenness is a sin.

Ephesians 5:18 says, “Do not be drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit.”

Proverbs 20:1 warns that wine is a mocker and strong drink leads to confusion.

So the issue is not just drinking, but losing control.

Any substance that takes control of your mind, your behavior, or your spiritual sensitivity becomes dangerous spiritually.

3. THE REAL BIBLICAL QUESTION IS NOT ONLY “IS IT ALLOWED?”

Many people ask:
“Is it a sin or not?”

But the deeper question Scripture pushes us to ask is:

Does it glorify God?
Does it strengthen my spiritual life?
Does it enslave or weaken me?
Does it affect my witness as a believer?

1 Corinthians 10:31 says:
“Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

So even if something is not directly named as sin, it may still be spiritually unprofitable.

4. ADDICTION IS A SPIRITUAL WARNING SIGN

Anything that controls you is dangerous.

The Bible says:
“I will not be brought under the power of anything” (1 Corinthians 6:12).

If a habit becomes something you cannot stop, it has moved from choice to bondage.

And bondage is never God’s desire for His children.

5. BALANCED BIBLICAL CONCLUSION

Smoking:
Not mentioned directly in Scripture, but it violates the principle of honoring God with your body and avoiding what destroys it.

Alcohol:
Not all drinking is sin, but drunkenness and addiction are clearly condemned.

So the Christian life is not about excuses, but about wisdom, self-control, and spiritual responsibility.

THE FINAL TRUTH TO EVERY BELIEVER

God is not only interested in what you do, but what controls you.

A believer is called to freedom, holiness, and discipline, not bondage or self-destruction.

Your body is God’s temple, treat it with reverence.

Smoking is not named in the Bible, but it goes against the principle of honoring God with your body because it damages health and can create addiction. Alcohol is not forbidden entirely, but drunkenness and loss of control are clearly condemned in Scripture. The Bible calls believers to live in self-control, holiness, and wisdom, ensuring that nothing becomes a master over them. The true Christian question is not just what is permitted, but what truly glorifies God and builds spiritual strength.

Let us learn, reason, and grow together in God’s Word.

WHAT CONTROLS YOU: YOUR SPIRIT OR YOUR HABITS?
