THE ANGEL GOD HAD TO LOCK AWAY
There is a mystery in Scripture that many people read past without fully realizing the weight of it. The Bible speaks about a place in the universe that God Himself keeps sealed under lock and key. It is not hell. It is something different. The Bible calls it the Abyss.
The Scriptures give us glimpses of this terrifying place. In Revelation 9:1 it says, “And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.” This reveals something powerful. The Abyss does not open by accident. A key is involved, and that key is under the authority of heaven.
The Abyss is described as a prison. Not a place made for humans, but a place so deep, so dark, and so terrifying that even demons tremble at the thought of being sent there. When Jesus encountered the demonic spirits in a possessed man, the Bible records something astonishing. Luke 8:31 says, “And they begged Him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.” Even demons fear that prison.
So the question rises in the mind. What is down there that causes such terror?
The Abyss is not empty.
Deep within that prison there is a king waiting in the darkness. His name is Abaddon. Scripture reveals him as the angel of the Abyss. Revelation 9:11 says, “They had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he is called Apollyon.”
He is not described as just another wandering spirit. He is a ruler connected directly to that terrifying prison.
For centuries he has been chained. Motionless. Silenced by the authority and will of God. The Bible shows us that certain dark powers are restrained until the appointed time. Jude 1:6 says, “And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling, He has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.”
Nothing about that prison operates outside God’s command.
Yet the book of Revelation opens a window into the future and reveals something astonishing. A day will come when heaven will move again concerning that prison. But it will not be an army descending to battle. It will not be a warrior coming to struggle against darkness.
Instead, an angel will come down from heaven with a single assignment.
To turn the key.
Revelation 9:2 describes the moment: “When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.”
When the shaft of the Abyss is opened, the first thing that rises will not be fire. It will be darkness. A darkness so thick that the Bible says it will rise like smoke and darken the sun and the sky itself.
Then from within that darkness, Abaddon will rise.
Not to rule the universe freely.
Not to overthrow God.
But to carry out a judgment that has already been determined and permitted by the authority of heaven.
This moment reminds us of a powerful truth that echoes throughout all of Scripture. No power in existence moves outside the sovereignty of God. Every force, every spirit, every realm seen and unseen ultimately answers to His authority.
Colossians 1:16 reminds us, “For by Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him.
1. The Abyss is a Special Prison
Not hell, not made for humans.
A deep, dark, terrifying place that even demons fear.
Only opened by God’s authority with a key (Revelation 9:1).
2. Demons Fear the Abyss
Luke 8:31 shows demons begging not to be sent there.
This shows the Abyss is a place of ultimate restraint and judgment, even for evil spirits.
Reflect on God’s supreme authority over all things, seen and unseen.
1. Submit your life fully to His guidance, knowing no darkness or evil is beyond His control.
2. Live in obedience and faith, trusting that God’s plans will prevail even in times of fear or uncertainty.
3. Pray for discernment to recognize the spiritual battles around you, and stand firm in the protection and power of Jesus Christ.
4. Share the truth of God’s sovereignty with others, encouraging them to trust Him above all powers, visible or hidden.
